Portage County Historical Society

Current Ongoing Projects

The Society and its members are always working on "Projects". These projects may include building restoration, specific historic research, upgrading our archives storage or publications.

Currently the following projects require funding and/or Volunteers/Docents.

  • Increase our holdings about ethnic groups within Portage County, Wisconsin.
  • Collections cataloging. The Society has a very large collection of material. No single catalog exists of this material. Hareware and software are in place, but 1,000's of hours of volunteer time to do the actual cataloging.
  • Restoration of the General Store at Heritage Park. The interior must be restored before we can begin displaying items.
  • Restoration of the Post Office/Doctor's Office at Heritage Park. The former Plover Post Office also served as a Doctor's office. The interior has to be restored.
  • Continuing restoration at the Historic Fire House No.2. All the windows and much of the interior has to be restored. No estimate available at this time.
  • Continuing maintenance of the Beth Israel Synagogue. Many small projects here. Exterior doors, weather proofing etc.

Because we are continually receiving donations of material from municipalities, organizations and individuals we are simply running out of storage space. A need for a central office/museum with a large storage area is required. Several options are being explored. See Capital Improvement 2021.
